Where’s the best place in Colorado to see bears, birds and other wildlife?
Cuchara is one of the best kept secrets in Colorado. Our valley remains wonderful and wild, and so does our wildlife.
Wildlife watching is one of Cuchara’s favorite pastimes. With wildlife such as deer, elk, and black bear roaming the valley’s pristine forests, and bald eagles and red-tailed hawks soaring in the skies near lakes and rivers, it’s easy to see why.
Grab your binoculars and camera and start driving up the Scenic Highway of Legends or any other road and chances are, you’ll see some kind of wildlife.
Or, take a hike thru the forest to get a close up view of the wildlife. You may see squirrels and chipmunks, rabbits, foxes, raccoons, skunks, beavers, wild turkey, deer, elk, bobcats, mountain lions, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, or the occasional black bear.
Our forests are home to many species of birds, including Steller Jays, Magpies, Chickadees, Hummingbirds, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Grosbeaks, Blackbirds, Rosy-Finches, Sparrows, Hawks, Eagles, and many more. Every spring and fall we have a large migration of birds that stop over on their way to summer breeding grounds or on their way to their winter homes.
It’s important to always keep a safe distance from the animals. Remembering never to feed, pet, chase or harass them.
